Kingman, Arizona. – Students from Kingman High School belonging to HOSA Chapter sponsored by the Regional Center for Border Health, Inc./Western Arizona Health Education Council (RCBH/WAHEC) won 1st place at the State HOSA Conference competitions and made it to the National Leadership HOSA Conference, as proudly announced today by Ms. Amanda Aguirre, President and CEO of the RCBH.
Gold medalists from the Health Occupation Students Association (HOSA) are Carlos Rodriguez, Milena Tapia and Erickson Zinger. They participated at the State HOSA Conference held in Tucson, Arizona from April 6 to 8, 2015 for Medical Innovations, with the idea to put Bluetooth capability in leads on heart monitors.
According to Ms. Carol Gunnerson, Kingman High HOSA Advisor, also placing at the state leadership conference was the Parliamentary Procedure team from Kingman High School, who received 4th place in the competition.
“I am always very proud of my students who compete because we are like school clubs and my students learn their skills out of school, on their own time,” said Ms. Gunnerson, “I normally have 3 to 5 qualify for nationals every year.”
One of the students, Milena Tapia, expressed that "Getting the opportunity to go to state was already exciting and getting first place in our competition made the experience ten times better. I would do it again if I could."
A freshman, Carlos Rodriguez said this is his first year doing HOSA, and added “I wasn't expecting to win anything at all. My thought was to just have fun in the process. It turned out that having fun is a way to win."
The Kingman High chapter also received Gold status with 19 members completing the criteria for Bronze membership.
HOSA in the state of Arizona has grown to over 8,000 members. Over 3,000 competed at the state leadership conference.
The National Leadership HOSA Conference will be celebrated in Anaheim, California from June 24, to June 27, 2015.
