Faith Mendoza won a Bronze medal during the 2016 Spring Leadership Conference recently celebrated in Tucson, and that gave her the pass to compete in the national competition which will take place in Nashville, Tennessee, from June 22nd to 25th, 2016
Lake Havasu, AZ.– A local Lake Havasu High School student sponsored by the Regional Center for Border Health, Inc./Western Arizona Health Education Council (RCBH/WAHEC) is making history since this is the first time ever a Lake Havasu student makes it to the Health Occupation Students Association (HOSA) International Leadership Conference.
Faith Mendoza won a Bronze medal during the 2016 Spring Leadership Conference recently celebrated in Tucson, and that gave her the pass to compete in the national competition which will take place in Nashville, Tennessee, from June 22nd to 25th, 2016.
RCBH/WAHEC has been sponsoring HOSA High Schools Chapters in Yuma and La Paz Counties for years, and this year students from San Luis, Kofa, Kingman and Lake Havasu participated in the state wide competition presenting health related topics.
According to Jan Esmay, Lake Havasu High School HOSA Advisor, the school sent 14 students to the Spring Leadership Conference this year. Faith Mendoza participated in Human Growth and Development earning a Bronze Medal and the opportunity to go to nationals.
“Faith and her mom are so excited and so grateful with Regional Center for Border Health, Inc.”, said Mrs. Esmay, and added; “Faith has given me her word that she will definitely be going to nationals (actually it's Internationals this year) to compete. This is Lake Havasu's first ever HOSA competitor at such a high level.”
The community is invited to learn more about this important achievement of Mendoza and her group at the HOSA Chapter by visiting a newly created website named http://lhhshosa.wix.com/lhusd.
Other areas the Lake Havasu High School students participated in were Forensic Science, Health Career Display, Medical Terminology, Health Education, and Prepared Speaking. Some of the students rather than competing were part of the Courtesy Corp and served as patients for some of the events. The competition gave them the opportunity to reflect on health issues, said Mrs. Esmay.
“I am glad we are able to support talented students in Lake Havasu,” stated Ms. Amanda Aguirre, President and CEO of Regional Center for Border Health, Inc., and added “we are very proud of Faith and we are sure she will do a great job at the National competition and her story will inspire others to continue thriving for high education”.
HOSA in the state of Arizona has grown to over 8,000 members. Over 3,000 competed at the state leadership conference. To learn more about HOSA please visit the website www.hosa.org
