Bushes, old appliances, spindles and more waste materials were removed from Mrs. Maria Hernandez's home backyard today.
Yuma, Arizona – (July 1st, 2015). – Despite the weather changes from muggy, rainy and sunny the 18 students participating on the 18th Annual “Our Children / Our Community” Community Outreach Campaign and Youth Leadership Program sponsored by the Regional Center for Border Health, Inc., (RCBH) gave a Somerton senior resident a better and cleaner view of her home this morning.
Mrs. Maria Hernandez, 100 years old, was visited by the enthusiastic group guided by RCBH Family Care Coordinators at her home located at Somerton Avenue, where bushes, old appliances, spindles and more waste materials were removed from her home backyard.
Also some threes were pruned by the students on a corridor of Mrs. Hernandez garden, so she can walk safely through her patio.
“I am so grateful with you, I really like this new view you gave to my home, I really appreciate you”, stated Mrs. Hernandez, moments after the 3 hour clean-up activity at her home.
City of Somerton Public Works Department supplied shovels and rakes along with a 6 yards container that was filled more than 15 times with all the garbage taken from the house.
Even though the work was so hard some of the students were smiling while they lift up the garbage while they said there is no doubt the clean-up would give Mrs. Hernandez joy for living.
“It’s always a pleasure to be a part of the improvement of the quality of life of the community, and also engaging the students in a making-a-difference dynamic to impact the cities they live makes us very proud”, expressed Ms. Amanda Aguirre, President and CEO of the Regional Center for Border Health, Inc.
Later this day, the “Our Children / Our Community” Community Outreach Campaign and Youth Leadership Program students visited the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department where Firefighter Israel Carbajal explained what does it take to be a firefighter. Also Barbra Rochester Executive Director of Crossroads Mission was at the RCBH Headquarters to give the students a view of the non-profit.
